What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a traditional Hindu system of healing evolved from a deep understanding of creation by the sages of India thousands of years ago. Originated as a part of Vedic science, it emerged from the sacred texts (Vedas) over 5000 years ago.

Ayurveda = the science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science, knowledge)

Ayurveda seeks to treat and integrate body, mind, and spirit by using a comprehensive, holistic approach based on the idea of balance. Knowledge of Ayurveda therefore helps us to create this balance by understanding our own constitution.

According to Ayurvedic philosophy the entire cosmos is an interplay of the energies of the 5 elements (Panchamahabhutas):

  • Akasha (space/ ether)
  • Vayu (air)
  • Agni (fire)
  • Jala (water)
  • Prithvi (earth)

These then combine in the living body to form three basic principles called the tridoshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Prakruti is an individual’s underlying characteristics (physical and mental) defined by the energy patterns of the doshas.

Within us individuals, the 3 doshas are basic types of energy, functional principles, and are linked to the basic biology of the body… such as how they form the functions in our bodies and temperaments in our mind.

As we are the elements, everything that is outside, works the same inside…

What happens in an Ayurvedic consultation?

Via a questionnaire that is sent out to you, followed by the consultation, I am able to get a good idea as to which elements are more prevalent inside of you, determining your Dosha/ constitution (Prakruti). This will help me to discover what imbalances are present in the body, as well as help you to understand yourself better, in terms of why your body is physically the way it is, as well as why your mind works in certain ways.  This helps to outline what is required to get ourselves back into balance and live a more healthy and vibrant life.

This is done through an Ayurvedic protocol which is sent to you after the consultation helping you with food, lifestyle and supplement recommendations, as well as functional testing if required.
